Transponder Key
A traditional metal blade key with a chip in the plastic head. You physically insert and turn it. The chip must be programmed to the car or the engine won't start — see transponder programming. Common on cars from the late 1990s to mid-2010s.
Remote / Flip Key
A key with remote lock/unlock buttons, often with a blade that flips out at the press of a button. Combines a transponder chip with remote central locking. Both the blade and the remote need cutting and programming.
Proximity / Smart Key
A fob you keep in your pocket — the car unlocks as you approach and starts with a button. There's usually a hidden emergency blade inside. Replacing these requires reading the immobiliser and is where SERMI accreditation matters most.
Keyless Entry (Push-Button Start)
